Yesterday witnessed a tragic accident on the South Side of Chicago which resulted in the death of a mother and her two young children. According to news reports, a 30-year old mother was walking with her two children, who were both school age according to witnesses. The family was hit by a big semi-tractor trailer near 43rd and South Ashland Avenue. The mother and children were later pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital of Cook County.
Massive, 80,000 lbs. Machines
According to news reports by the Chicago Tribune and ABC7 Eyewitness News, the driver of the truck appeared to not even be aware that the truck had struck and killed three pedestrians. As a truck accident attorney, I am very aware of how massive these trucks are, but this crash tragically illustrates the dangers posed by trucks. That someone could strike and run over three people without even being aware of it drives that point home in such a sad, yet poignant way.
Real Concern about Insurance Limits
The news media report that the truck is owned by Monson & Sons, which by an initial reports appears to be a small company. Based on my experience fighting for justice for truck accident victims, most smaller truck companies opt for the lowest level of insurance coverage mandated by federal guidelines. Given the tragedy that was wrought by the truck in this case, the $750,000 minimum coverage would be woefully inadequate to deliver a fair and just compensation to the family of the deceased.
This deadly accident must be another call-to-action for the federal government to raise the minimum insurance levels to an amount that is more in keeping with the real costs associated with such devastating truck crashes.
Starting the Fight for Justice
As a truck accident attorney, I know how important the first steps are when fighting for justice for victims. There is vital evidence that needs to be identified, recorded and secured as soon as possible. The investigation needs to start now as we know for sure that the insurance companies for the truck driver and trucking company have already begun their work. At Whiting Law Group, our Emergency Response Truck Accident Investigation Team is designed to do just that.
As I follow this developing story in the news this weekend, I shall keep this family in my thoughts and prayers. They have many sad, difficult days ahead.
