FMCSA and How Medical Conditions Impact Driving

As society modernizes and comes to a greater understanding of how our bodily health effects our daily lives, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has dedicated increased resources to the study and understanding of how medical conditions impact driving.

Studies on How Medical Conditions Impact Driving

The FMCSA Considers how Medical Conditions Impact DrivingThe FMCSA has produced a number of very detailed reports on how different medical conditions affect the safety of drivers when operating motor vehicles. The reports were researched and written by leading, independent doctors, clinicians and scientists who are experts in their respective medical fields.

Below are just a few reports that can be found on the FMCSA website.

Medical Expert Panels

The FMCSA has a number of medical expert panels that study and advise on key health issues and how medical conditions impact driving. According to FMCSA, its Medical Expert Panel (MEP) Program is aimed at improving road and highway safety by giving the government agency access to guidance on important medical standards and research from leading medical clinicians and researchers. The FMCSA relies on its Medical Expert Panels to help craft medical fitness guidelines for commercial truck drivers who operates their tractor trailers in more than one state.

Obtaining a Truck Driver’s Medical DOT Form

When pursuing a negligence case against a truck driver and a trucking company, it is very important to obtain a copy of the commercial truck driver’s medical DOT form, his medical conditions and all his past medical records. These records are integral to establishing not only whether the truck driver was approved to drive, but also qualified and safe to drive the tractor-trailer.

The increased emphasis on how medical conditions impact driving will only lead to safer roads for us all. I am encouraged by the FMCSA’s focus on the interplay between medical conditions and safe driving.
