A massive truck crash that involved 19 semi-tractor trailers and additional 27 vehicles left three people dead – and more than 20 injured – on a snowy I-94 in Michigan City, IN. The deadly crash happened at about 3:00 pm on Thursday, January 23, 2013.
According to the LaPorte County Coroner, the three deceased were a 66-year old man from Chicago and a husband and wife from Michigan.
Reminder of the Dangers of Winter Driving
As I wrote just last month, winter driving can be very hazardous, especially when driving near big trucks. Their weight and size make them particularly dangerous in even the best weather conditions. This deadly crash is a forceful and violent reminder of the risks that the big trucks pose to the motoring public.
A Complicated Truck Crash Investigation
The dynamics of truck crash scene investigations are complex by their very nature. In this tragic crash, the complexities of the accident investigation will be compounded by the number of vehicles involved in the crash. The victims of this truck crash – and there are many – will need to work quickly in order to ensure that key evidence and details are preserved for any course of action against the negligent or reckless drivers (and companies) in the crash. This is just the sort of crash for which our emergency response truck accident investigation team was created.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the many victims and their families.
