Two days ago, a heroic UPS truck driver saved a man from drowning in Rockford, Illinois. The Rockford Register Star reported that about 1:00 pm on May 5, 2015, Jeff Hermansen pulled his UPS box truck over to the side of the road after he witnessed a man jump from the East State Street bridge into the cold waters of the Rock River. As reported by the news media, Mr. Hermansen swam about 15 yards into the river to pull out the man who had jumped from the bridge. According to Hermansen, that man was trying to keep his own head underwater, so Hermansen had to flip him over while also trying to swim back to the riverbank.

In speaking about the bravery and selflessness of the UPS truck driver, Rockford Fire Chief Derek Bergsten praised the driver: “To put his life at risk for another human being that he didn’t even know says a lot.”

Many Great Men and Women in Trucking

As I’ve written many times on this website, I am a big fan of the trucking industry. It’s an important component of our nation’s economy and it provides a significant number of men and women with the means to provide for themselves and their families.

The example of self-giving and generosity that Mr. Hermansen demonstrated yesterday is a reaffirming example of just one of the many outstanding people who work in the trucking industry.

I thank Mr. Hermansen for his brave efforts to save the life of a stranger – at real risk to his own life. I congratulate UPS, a key stakeholder in the trucking and shipping sectors, for the exemplary work shown by its employee. A proud day for the entire UPS team!
